Hilton Food Group, which posted solid annual results last week, is the largest dedicated packer of red meat in Europe, based on revenue. It manufactures steaks, lamb and beef roasting joints and value ranges such as steak mince meat.
Operating from state-of-the-art facilities in the UK, Ireland, Holland, Sweden and Poland, the company supplies some of Europe's premier supermarket chains, including Tesco in the UK, as well as Ahold and Albert Heijn in the Netherlands.
Rapid growth has been achieved by geographical expansion, product range extensions and the underlying growth in the market achieved by Hilton's retail customers.
While the market is definitely challenging, shares are undervalued at the current level of 160p. In 2008, turnover rose 26.3% to £729.5 million, which boosted pre-tax profits by 11.6% to £17.3m.

Shares in the biotech group Renovo leapt 15% to 30.5p last week after it said it had received a bid approach. The shares reached a high of 230p in 2007, but since then Renovo has been a disappointment, with the development of its main product - an injection to reduce scarring - delayed more than once.
A study published last week in the Lancet said it showed positive results, but it is still two years away from being launched in America. This could be a good time for speculators to jump in, particularly as Renovo's £80 million cash pile - bigger than its market value - will continue to make it a bid target.
