Daniels and Varley were 'bonus winners'

The bosses of Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland were awarded cash and stock bonuses valued at more than £15.8m last year, according to a survey.

American pay consultants Equilar showed two of the biggest winners in the 2010 were two bank chiefs who since stepped down from their roles, it was also reported.

Eric Daniels, former chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group, was awarded £5.1m last year, up from £3m in 2009.

Former Barclays head John Varley earned nearly £3.6m, an increase of 239% on 2009.

The survey also revealed bank chiefs' average pay in America and Europe grew by 36pc last year to £5.9m despite the recent uproar over the lottery style payouts.
