LLOY Overview

At one time in the nineties Lloyds was among the biggest banks in Europe having embarked on a multitude of deals, the largest being the merger of Lloyds and TSB in 1995. Having also taken over Cheltenham & Gloucester and life insurer Scottish Widows, Lloyds TSB changed its tack by disposing much of its overseas operations to concentrate on its core markets. The group was thwarted in its ambitions though when regulatory authorities stopped a potential merger with Abbey National.
