A sharp decline in afternoon trading meant that European markets finished in the red as concerns over the troubles in Libya and surging oil prices failed to abate. Positive figures for growth and unemployment failed to offset fears for global growth caused by the turmoil in the Middle East. Banks in all major benchmark indices led the decline.
