London close: Late rally almost saves day

A rally by US stocks following a reassuring statement from Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke encouraged UK stocks to stage a late recovery. Although the Footsie closed down on the day there were, in fact, more risers than fallers among its constituents.
