Date: Thursday 05 Jan 2012
US markets ended the day mixed but with a slightly firmer bias as investors were given encouragement by jobs data, and chose to ignore the financial problems in Europe. Banks were leading the way up, with the S&P 500 finishing higher for the third day in a row, although the more narrowly based Dow Jones industrial average registered its first losing day of the year, despite rallying strongly in the afternoon session.
