US close: Subdued ahead of Fed minutes

Leading stocks were little changed with investors reluctant to commit themselves ahead of Tuesday's release of the minutes of the most recent meeting of the Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee. The minutes are likely to give a clue as to the timing of a rate increase and whether the second phase of quantitative easing – nicknamed QE2 – is still steaming ahead.
