London close: Late rally on rate cut optimism

London staged a late rally as hopes rose of another big rate cut announced by the Bank of England tomorrow, in response to more gloomy economic data. The dire state of the UK jobs market was highlighted today by news that permanent placements fell at a record pace last month. A survey conducted by Markit Economics revealed that the decline in both permanent and temporary jobs was the quickest since the survey began 11 years ago.
