It could have been far worse – just look at Marks & Spencer and its 6.7 per cent quarterly sales decline, It’s true that like-for-like UK sales growth excluding petrol was, at 3.7 per cent, the worst for eight years, but Tesco has weathered the storm well so far and the figure actually represents an acceleration of the rate on the first quarter.
