US midday: Stocks rise on Greek optimism

-Bernanke disagrees Fed policy having perverse negative effect on growth.
-Bernanke says US banks have made progress in protecting themselves from Europe crisis.

The main US equity benchmarks have turned around and are now moving slightly higher.

That as Fed President Ben S.Bernanke reiterated that the economy continues to need low rates and on the back of reports that Greek authorities may be close to an agreement which would allow them to obtain access to a second EU rescue package.

Also helping shares are gains in beverage maker Coca Cola following its latest quarterly results, which have come in ahead of expectations, while Coca Cola Enterprises has raised its quarterly dividend.

Quarterly results from Yum Brands and Anadarko Petroleum also seem to have pleased investors.

From a sector stand-point the best performers now are: consumer electronics (4.47%), transportation services (1.84%) and restaurants (1.43%).

MACROECONOMY

Weekly comparable retail sales rose by 1.8% last week, according to the latest ICSC survey data.

The Federal Reserve will release its consumer credit data for the month of December at 8pm.

OTHER MARKETS

Front month West Texas crude futures are now rising 1.70% to the $98.56/barrel mark in NYMEX trading.

10 year US Treasuries are down by 18/32 dollars, with yields at 1.97%.
