Market overview: Miners offset financial gloom

1630: Footsie finished flat after see-sawing between red and blue for much of the day as buoyant miners struggled against downbeat financial stocks.

Tullow Oil continued winning back some of the losses it has sustained recently, in line with the higher oil price. Fellow explorer and producer Cairn Energy and oils services company John Wood Group were not far behind.

Kazakh miner Kazakhmys led the mining sector higher after its compatriot ENRC posted a strong set of half-year figures and said it expected higher commodity prices to hold despite the macroeconomic uncertainties.
