1630: Footsie posted triple-digit losses for the second day in a row after a dip following a poor opening in the US turned into a slump.
HBOS ended up as the heaviest faller, leading the leading index lower after data showing a rise in US unemployment hit sentiment. Barclays and Lloyds TSB also lost value.
Resource stocks and insurers were also lower, with Ukraine-focused iron ore producer Ferrexpo leading the former sector's decline. Insurers on the back foot included Prudential and Legal and General.
