Close: With Wall Street failing to live up to expectations of an early jump Footsie ended the day as it began it - firmly in the red.
The tumble came despite strong gains in the mining sector, with Antofagasta and Vedanta managing to hold onto their double digit percentage gains. Miners were helped by rising metals prices.
Unusually on a day of falls across the board, defensive stocks such as pharmaceuticals (AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline) and electricity group National Grid were out of favour.

It feels a bit like the scene in that iconic German film “Das Boot” when the submarine commander orders all the tanks to be blown in a vain effort to try and stop the damaged U-boat from sinking.
