Jaguar Land Rover ponders expansion on Merseyside

Jaguar Land Rover, the Indian-owned car-maker, is to expand its Merseyside factory, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The decision, which the paper claims will create 1,500 jobs, comes following the success of the Land Rover Evoque model which pushed the group’s sales up 30% last year.

Some observers believe profits for the full year could hit £1.5bn

The scale of the turnaround at JLR is staggering. It needed government guarantees back in 2009 to support its sale to Indian parent company Tata.

Now it is seeing huge demand from emerging markets, specifically China, where sales growth was over 80% in 2011.

The news that new manufacturing jobs are being generated despite worries over a recession will be welcome news to the coalition government.

One of David Cameron’s stated policy aims is to “rebalance” the UK economy.
