The Consumer Prices Index, the government's preferred measure of inflation, was 4.2% in December, down from 4.8% in November; the largest fall between 2 months since Dec 2008.
The largest downward pressures to the change in CPI annual inflation between November and December 2011 came from petrol, gas and clothing, according to the Office for National Statistics.
