Eurozone economic confidence improves

The Eurozone's economic sentiment index rose in January by 0.6 points to 93.4, according to the data released by the European Commission today.

The figure up from 92.8 the previous month, but slightly below the 93.8 expected. Nevertheless, this is the first improvement in confidence since March 2011 and is due to improved confidence in the services, consumer, and construction sectors.

- Industrial confidence for January: -7.2. Previous: -7.2.
- Services confidence for January: -0.6. Previous: -2.6.
- Consumer confidence for January: -20.7. Previous: -21.3.
- Retail confidence for January: --15.5. Previous: -12.2.
- Construction confidence for January: -28.3. Previous: -28.9.
- Business climate for January: -0.21. Previous: -0.32.

Looking at the largest Eurozone economies, confidence improved in Germany (+2.3 points) and in Spain (+1.8 points) but worsened in France (-2.1 points ) and Italy (-1.1%). The economic sentiment index only remains above its long-term average in Germany.
