New car sales in the UK accelerated during May, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has said.
Car makers saw a 7.9% year-on-year rise in the number of cars sold to 162,288, boosted by a 14.3% leap in private sales.
The increase puts the total number of cars sold in the year-to-date 2.6% ahead of the same period in 2011 at 868,166.
Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive, said: ""May's 7.9% increase in new car registrations is good news for the motor industry and the UK economy.
"The consistent climb in new car registrations during the first five months of the year suggests that confidence is returning, despite financial uncertainty in the eurozone."
So far this year the Ford Fiesta is the most popular car, although in May the most sales were seen for the Vauxhall Corsa.
