US midday: Greek elections knock confidence

US stocks fluctuated on Monday morning as investors mulled the election result in Greece over the weekend and the sharp rise in Spanish bond yields.

Spanish 10 year bonds slumped today, pushing the yield above 7%, the point at which Portugal, Ireland and Greece all sought bailouts.

The country is already in receipt of a €100bn rescue package for its beleaguered banking sector but the market simply does not believe that will be enough.

US investors are now pricing in the possibility of continued euro turmoil.

COMPANIES

Facebook was up 4.7% at 12:23 in New York, a month on from its botched public offering. Despite today’s gains the stock is still 17.3% down on its initial price. Another tech stock, eBay, also gained on the S&P, rising 3.6% just after midday.

One notable feature of Monday has been the strengthening of the dollar, up 0.44% against the euro to $1.2583. This has the effect of pushing the price of oil down. At 12:06 in New York the futures contract on a barrel of west Texas intermediate crude stood at $83.16, down 1% since the start of trading.
