LONDON (ShareCast) - House builders are having a good day, helped by strong results from Berkeley and positive broker coverage.

The company reported a 3.2% increase in annual pretax profit in the year to April, to £194.3m on revenues of £991m up 8%. At the year-end, it held forward sales of £1.2bn with gearing of less than 1%.

Fellow housebuilder Taylor Wimpey was by far and away the best performer in the mid-cap index though, helped by a ‘buy’ rating at Panmure Gordon, and was joined among the top 10 performers by Bellway, which the broker also views as a ‘buy’.

Bradford and Bingley is taking a battering again after the investment group Resolution withdrew its offer for the mortgage lender.
