LONDON (ShareCast) - The highlight of the week is likely to be the Bank of England’s decision on interest rates.

A cut is unlikely, particularly the week after the European Central Bank raised rates in an effort to curb inflation, but concerns over continued weakness in the economy may make the bank wary of lifting the benchmark rate from the current 5%.

The weak housing market is one of the main concerns in the current economic climate, so Persimmon’s Tuesday trading statement will be seized on for some clues on the sector’s health. The company said in April that it has has delayed building at new sites until the mortgage market improves after owning up to a 24% slump in sales since the start of 2008.

Tullow Oil said in May that it has benefited from increasing oil prices, while overall production in the year to date has been in line with expectations. With crude surging past $145 a barrel lately, more of the same can be expected from Wednesday’s update.

On the results front, Sports Direct issues full-year figures. Back in April the sportswear retailer said trading has remained challenging but reiterated that it is still confident of achieving EBITDA of around £148m.
