York Potash Project - approvals submissions

§ Mine & MTS and MHF applications to be submitted as planned today

§ Authorities will begin formal consultation on applications in the next two weeks

§ Decisions are expected by the end of January 2015

§ Decisions will be taken in line with local and national planning policies and taking into account a balance of factors (benefits and impacts)

§ Harbour consultation progressing well with submission targeted for December 2014

The Directors of Sirius Minerals Plc (AIM: SXX, OTCQX: SRUXY) ("Sirius" or the "Company") are pleased to provide an update on the approvals process for the York Potash Project.

The planning applications for the mine and mineral transport system ("MTS") and for the materials handling facility ("MHF") will be submitted to the relevant local authorities today, in line with previous expectations.  The application for the mine and MTS is a 'straddling application' that is being submitted to both the North York Moors National Park Authority ("NYMNPA") and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council ("RCBC").  The application for the MHF is a 'County Matter' application being submitted to RCBC.  The statutory determination period for both applications is 16 weeks.

Chris Fraser, Managing Director and CEO of Sirius, commented:

"We believe we have a compelling planning case that clearly demonstrates that the York Potash Project can deliver exceptional economic benefits, not only locally here in North Yorkshire and in Teesside but also for the wider UK economy.

"We have planned the Project with a very high regard for the environment and where possible minimising associated impacts.  However, it is now for each authority to determine the applications according to the relevant policies and we keenly await their decisions."

During the planning application review process, the submission documentation will be available publicly both on the local authorities' websites and the Company's website.  The planning application review process may engender comments, supportive opinions and various objections.  This is a normal part of the planning process and the Company does not intend to speculate on the implications of these as the process progresses.  The Company does intend to provide updates on significant issues, should they arise, and provide routine updates at key milestone events, having consulted with the authorities.

The Company is looking forward to a positive response to its application and is progressing engineering with the intent to start construction as soon after a positive decision is made as possible.

In addition to the mine, MTS and MHF processes described above, the Company is currently engaged in its formal pre-application consultation work for the Harbour Facilities, located at Bran Sands, Teesside.  Its public exhibition events have now concluded, with the remainder of the public consultation period running until 16 October 2014.  An application for a Development Consent Order to facilitate the harbour development is currently planned to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in December 2014.
