LONDON (ShareCast) - BTG regained upward momentum today on news that abiraterone, a drug it licensed to Cougar Biotechnology, can successfully treat aggressive, chemotherapy-resistant prostate cancer.

A new study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology revealed that abiraterone, or CB7630, caused “significant” tumour shrinkage and reduction in prostate specific antigen levels in 70-80% of men with the disease.

The life sciences company, which last week said trading is in line with expectations, bought the drug from the Institute of Cancer Research and funded its early stage development.

“We are delighted that abiraterone continues to show excellent potential as a new treatment for these resistant forms of prostate cancer, which represent a significant unmet need,” said BTG boss Louise Makin.

BTG will receive milestone payments and royalties on sales of CB7630 if it is successfully developed and approved for sale.
