Matthew Ashley joined the company in 2010 as group financial controller after leaving Deloitte, where he was a transport and infrastructure director.
He has been working as acting group finance director since October 2014, when Jez Maiden left to work for Croda International.
The director said: "I have greatly enjoyed being part of National Express' success over the last five years.
"The strength of our existing businesses and opportunities presented by our new markets, demonstrates that National Express has a strong future and I relish the opportunity to play my part in that as finance director," he continued.
Liberum analysts said there could "potentially" be "some disappointment to not get a candidate with previous PLC experience, but avoiding a period without a permanent appointee more important, in our view". The broker gave a 'buy' recommendation and a target price of 300p.
