LONDON (ShareCast) - US shares ended the week on a high after a difficult spell as investors speculated that troubled investment bank Lehman Brothers could be sold and the oil price eased back below $115 a barrel.

Lehman Brothers rallied on reports that Korea development Bank is considering making an offer for the investment bank.

Oil prices eased due to a fall in the dollar and the resumption of flow through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline. Crude oil for October delivery fell back below $115 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

United Airlines and car maker General Motors, both of which depend on affordable oil prices, posted gains. Tyre maker Good Year also climbed.

However, oil stocks such as ConocoPhillips followed the oil price lower.

Metals prices fell too, dealing a blow to the likes of United States Steel.

It wasn’t all cheer in the financial sector either, with mortgage finance outfit Freddie Mac falling nearly 10% after seeing its stock ratings lowered to near junk status. Billionaire investor Warren Buffet added to the gloom, saying he passed up an opportunity to help Freddie out.

Across the markets, the Dow Jones rose 197 points to 11,628 with the Nasdaq up 34 points to 2,414. The S&P 500 jumped 14 points to 1,292.

Fed chairman Ben Bernanke spoke at the Kansas City Fed’s annual economic symposium and said the financial crisis and high inflation are dragging on the economy.

In other company news, clothes retailer Gap said late Thursday that profits in the last quarter rose 51% versus the same period last year.
