Uncertainty over Ofcom replacing the BBC Trust, reports say
Government sources denied that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Trust will be axed, and that its power will be given to the UK communications regulator Ofcom, according to media reports.
The Daily Telegraph had reported that although negotiations had not started, the move was likely to occur, adding that the Government had commented “you can put your mortgage on it” referring to the mover.
To say a decision has been taken is just nonsense
“There is going to be an open consultation. To say a decision has been taken is just nonsense,” a source told The Guardian.
It was reported that the tasks would include regulating editorial standards, reviewing value for money and monitoring the BBC’s impact on the market, as well as shortening the length of the broadcaster's Charter from ten to five years.
Options for alternative regulatory structures are expected to be contained in the Green Paper that is set to be published before parliamentary recess on 20 July.
“The abolition of the BBC Trust is hardly a splash story,” said one Westminster source.
