Irish singer Val Doonican dies at 88
Irish singer and TV presenter Val Doonican passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88.
His family said he died "peacefully" at a nursing home in Buckinghamshire.
“He leaves behind his wife, Lynn, daughters Sarah and Fiona and grandchildren Bethany and Scott. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by family, friends and his many fans,” his family said in a statement.
Doonican conducted the “The Val Doonican show” on the BBC from 1965 to 1986, featuring his own performances and guest artists.
Doonican had five successive Top 10 albums in the UK Albums Chart in the 1960s and 1970s, with songs like “Elusive Butterfly”, “Walk Tall” and “The Special Years”.
His “Val Doonican Rocks, But Gently” album took The Beatles' “Sgt Pepper” off the top of the album charts in 1968.
