UK colder than Iceland as Britain is hit by coldest night of the year
Temperatures across Britain plunged to levels colder than in Iceland last night as the coldest night of the year set in for majority of the UK.
Iceland’s capital of Reykjavík saw lows of 6C at 3am last night, significantly warmer than all of Britain.
Snow enveloped large parts of the north and heavy frost covered the ground in central London on Monday morning.

The Met Office has issued cold weather alerts across the country. The entire North and Midlands faced an amber warning, the highest possible without declaring a national emergency. Forecasters said social and healthcare services should be mobilised to make sure pensioners and other high-risk groups were not in danger.
However, the South West, South East face the slightly less severe yellow warning, meaning there was a 75% chance of freezing conditions.
The RAC has warned motorists to be careful in icy conditions on the roads as forecasters expect temperatures to remain as cold over the next few days.
