A 'level two' warning was issued by the Met Office, meaning that forecasters predict there is a 60% chance of temperatures being high enough on at least 2 days in a row and could significantly affect people's health.
Public Health England health protection director Dr Paul Cosford warned that the high temperatures could be "dangerous" for vulnerable groups of the population.
"While many people enjoy hot weather, high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who may be particularly vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses."
A tropical continental air mass moving from North Africa, Spain and Portugal is expected to reach the country by Tuesday.
