Aldi best at complying with supply rules, Iceland worst, survey shows
Discount supermarket Aldi rated most compliant with the industry code designed to protect suppliers, while Iceland is the worst, a new survey has shown.
The YouGov survey of supermarket suppliers commissioned by the Groceries Code Adjudicator showed a drop in suppliers reporting groceries code related issues in their dealings with ten retailers over the last year.
In the survey 40% of suppliers said Aldi rated consistently well in overall assessment of compliance with the grocery code, which is a smaller proportion than last year’s 45%.
Waitrose and Marks & Spencer were the second highest and third highest rated respectively.
At the other end of the scale, 8% of suppliers rated Iceland consistently well, while Morrisons and Tesco also rounded out the bottom three.
When suppliers were asked which retailers they had complained about over the past year, 54% of those who raised issues raised them about Tesco, followed by Morrisons at 26% and Asda at 15%.
Adjudicator Christine Tacon said the industry has some way to go in important areas but the result was a clear sign it is on the right track.
“Suppliers are more aware of the GCA and its work and fewer now believe the GCA will not be able to do anything if they bring an issue to me,” Tacon said in a statement.
