These resources will rollout over the next few months, according to the online company. Friends will be able to flag any concerning posts or comments and Facebook will alert relevant emergency services.
Facebook said on Wednesday: "We have teams working around the world, 24/7, who review any report that comes in. They prioritise the most serious reports, like self-injury, and send help and resources to those in distress."
The account-holder who wrote the worrisome posts will receive a message from Facebook urging them to seek help, connecting them with caring friends and a mental health expert at the National Suicide prevention Lifeline.
These changes will be rolled out in the US initially, but Facebook said it hopes to extend the care package across the globe.
