The US technology giant will provide a €150m (£107m) innovation fund to help news organisations "demonstrate new thinking" in digital journalism, as well as additional training and research for journalists in order to investigate how people consume news and find new techniques to crowdsource information.
Financial Times and The Guardian (UK), El País (Spain), Les Echos (France), FA2 and Die Zeit (Germany), NRC Media (The Netherlands) and La Stampa (Italy) will become founding members of the DNI together with journalism associations such as European Journalism Center (EJC), Global Editors Network (GEN) and International Media Association (INMA).
This announcement comes as the EU formally charged the US giant for violations in the web search.
There are legitimate questions about how high quality journalism can be sustained in the digital age
“The internet offers huge opportunities for the creation and dissemination of great journalism. But there are also legitimate questions about how high quality journalism can be sustained in the digital age. Through the Digital News Initiative, Google will work hand in hand with news publishers and journalism organisations to help develop more sustainable models for news. This is just the beginning and we invite others to join us,” said Google's President for Strategic relations in Europe Carlo d'Asaro Biondo.
The DNI is expected to be formally unveiled on Tuesday on the occasion of the FT Media Conference in London.
