Israel shoots down Syrian jet
Israel said on Tuesday it shot down a Syrian jet that has infiltrated the Israeli airspace of Golan Heights.
The Suckhoi-24 jet crossed the occupied Golan Heights, which has been part of Israeli territory since the 1967 Middle East war.
This is the first incident since 1982 involving Israel and a Syrian infiltrated plane.
It follows reports that the US and its Arab allied states have launched air strikes against Islamic State (IS).
However, general Shmueli, former head of intelligence in the Israeli Air Force, told the New York Times the events were not connected.
“I believe it’s an isolated event, I don’t see any escalation. I believe the Syrians know we don’t have any intention to be part of this war,” he said.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops killed on Tuesday two Palestinian believed to be part of Hamas.
Marwan Kawasme and Amar Abu Aysha were suspected of killing three Israeli teenagers in June. The men were shot dead during a gun battle in Hebron.
Hebron’s governor Kamel Hmeid, said: “We condemn this crime, this assassination, as deliberate and premeditated murder.”
In total, 2,129 Palestinian people have died since 8 July, while 64 Israeli soldiers and four civilians have also lost their lives.
