Over one million EU citizens face deportation risk as residency applications rocket
European citizens residing in Britain are waiting anxiously to find out whether they will be deported from the region after Brexit as they are unable to prove their right to residence.
A surge in applications for residency in Britain has taken place since the country's decision to leave the European Union earlier this year, with many unsure whether they are going to be able to live without restrictions when the departure eventually happens.
Campaign group 3 Million have said that as many as one million EU citizens are at risk because there is no way of recognising their status in the country.
Of those which have submitted applications for residency 30% do not have "realistic" evidence of their proof to reside in the UK.
The group also added that there is a backlog of almost 100,000 applications, indicating that the Home Office is struggling to process all of the paperwork associated with them.
Chairperson of the campaign group Nicholas Hatton told The Independent in an interview that there was "enormous" anxiety among Europeans living in the likes of London and other areas of the UK.
"I've spoken to hundreds of EU citizens in the UK – as well as UK citizens living in Europe – and it's the same feeling that they don’t feel supported by the Government. They feel like they’re being used."
