BoE chief rumoured to be top candidate for FCA role
The chancellor will this week begin his search to replace Martin Wheatley as head of the Financial Conduct Authority, with the Bank of England's chief economist said to be the current favourite.
Andy Haldane, who is also a member of the bank's monetary policy committee, is known for his calls for tighter regulation in the financial services industry and his opposition to raising interest rates in the near term.
One senior bank executive told the Sunday Times that Haldane "is definitely in the frame and is considered to be young and keen", adding that the only area of concern was his lack of experience in retail banking.
Wheatley's successor, who will be paid a basic salary of £460,000, will takeover the role in April.
