The aim is to provide 90% of landscape with access to voice and text coverage by 2017, reducing the lack of signal by 50%.
This deal is the latest in what seems to be a government crackdown on mobile networks. Recently, a plan was proposed to force operators to allow customers to hop from network to network.
UK culture secretary Sajid Javid said: “I am pleased to have secured a legally binding deal with the four mobile networks.”
Meanwhile, BT remains in talks to purchase the UK’s largest mobile network EE for a rumoured £12.5bn.
