Sirius Minerals surges on York Potash mine approval
Shares in Sirius Minerals surged 60% as it got the all-clear from the North York Moors National Park Authority for its York Potash mine.
The application was carried by eight votes to seven, on grounds that the economic benefits take precedence over potential environmental damage.
The development, which lies between Whitby and Scarborough, is expected to create at least 1,000 jobs, and generate £1bn for the UK economy.
Polyphalite, which is used in fertilisers, will be the mine's primary target.
"The case for the project has always been compelling because it will not only generate so many jobs and economic benefits, but also because it is accompanied by such extensive mitigations, safeguards and environmentally sensitive design," said chief executive Chris Fraser.
As of 10:45 BST, Sirius Minerals was trading 60% higher at 24p.
