Spotify launches "Discover Weekly" personalised playlist service
Spotify has launched a new service for users, in an effort to retain its market share against new rival Apple Music.
The music streamer's new service, Discover Weekly, analyses users' listening habits before creating a tailored, two hour playlist that is updated every Monday.
The more time the user spends listening to music, the more sophisticated the personalisation becomes, with the software also cross-referencing the user's taste's with the 75m strong Spotify community.
We wanted to make something that felt like your best friend making you a mixtape, labelled ‘music you should check out’, every single week,” product manager Matthew Ogle told The Guardian.
“Some weeks, your recent listening will nudge it in new directions, and in other weeks, Discover Weekly might be the one doing the nudging,” he added.
Spotify emphasised that its marketing partnerships with music labels will have no bearing on its recommendations and said it hoped the service will find new and emerging artists a platform to share their work.
