27 dead after ISIS-linked terror group strikes Egypt
A terror group associated with ISIS has killed at least 27 people in several co-ordinated attacks on Egyptian police and military in the Sinai Peninsula.
The strike, led by Egypt’s most active terrorist organisation Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, targeted three towns with car bombs and rockets.
According to The Independent, the group detonated car bombs around military base and fired rockets at a hotel, a police club and more than 12 other checkpoints.
Around 58 people have been confirmed as wounded by Reuters’ medical sources but the toll is expected to rise. Reuters said that the rocket and bomb attacks followed this week’s commemoration of the 2011 uprising in Egypt.
The US state department responded: “The United States remains steadfast in its support of the Egyptian government’s efforts to combat the threat of terrorism in Egypt as part of our continuing commitment to the strategic partnership between our two countries."
