PURCHASE OF SHARES BY BATISS INVESTMENTS

Xstrata plc ("Xstrata") announces that it was advised by Batiss Investments Limited ("Batiss") on Monday, 7th  July 2008 Batiss purchased 900,000 ordinary shares of US$0.50 each in Xstrata at an average price per share of 3747.4258 pence, through Xstrata's Equity Capital Management Programme. The purchase represents approximately 0.09 per cent. of Xstrata's issued ordinary share capital and brings the total number of shares held by Batiss to 11,750,000 ordinary shares in Xstrata or 1.2 per cent. of Xstrata's issued ordinary share capital.
