Sunday tips round-up: Aviva, UBM, Silence Therapeutics

Date: Sunday 13 May 2007

LONDON (ShareCast) - Life insurer Aviva's shares are unlikely to remain at current levels for much longer.

Takeover speculation is rife in the life insurance sector. If new chief executive Andrew Moss fails to impress the City over the next few months, someone will attempt to take over the company. Buy says the Sunday Telegraph.

Business-to-business publishing has traditionally been a glamour-free corner of the media planet. But things are changing. Professional publishers are weathering the advertising recession better than other traditional media players. UBM, whose assets include PR Newswire and trade titles Music Week and The Publican, is no exception. The company is trading on about 16 times its 2007 earning, keep buying says the Telegraph.

Silence Therapeutics - or SR Pharma as it was known until just a few weeks ago has soared as excitement has grown over its developing technology that can "silence" genes that cause disease. Its patents appear to be solid, and many analysts believe it is only a matter of time before one of the global drug giants launches a takeover bid, but the Telegraph says it is time to lock in some of huge gains seen recently. Sell.

Alliance Trust is one of the biggest investment trusts in the UK, with a market capitalisation of more than £2.5bn. Its top 10 holdings include BP, GlaxoSmithKline, Royal Dutch Shell, HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland and Vodafone. While it has been a dull company historically, Alliance is beginning to evolve into a more forward-thinking institution. It should also be a comparatively safe place to park some cash for a few years. Buy says the Telegraph.

Bus and train group National Express shares are trading on about 17 times 2007 earnings, compared to a sector average of 21.6. UBS has recently upgraded the company from neutral to buy. David Ross, the company's non-executive chairman, bought more shares last week, taking his holding to 1.8%. Buy says the Telegraph.

Buy and hold industrial chain maker Renold says the Mail on Sunday. New chairman Matthew Peacock is known for his turnround abilities and the company is keen to deliver double-digit sales growth.

The Mail also says Allergy Therapeutics, which is developing a treatment for hay fever sufferers, is a buy.
