LONDON (ShareCast) - Yesterday’s revival is unlikely to be repeated at the opening on Wall Street as recession fears hold sway, despite the economic stimulus bill successfully making it through Congress last night.
Across the markets, the Dow Jones 30 is expected to open 65 points lower at 12,213, while the broader based S&P Composite is pegged to slide 8 points to 1,331. The NASDAQ Composite is expected to start 9 points lower at 1,757.
Attention is likely to focus on MBIA today after the bond insurer’s shares fell sharply in after-hours trading on news that its discounted share issue raised $1bn, compared with a previously indicated target of $750m.
Coventry Health Care disappointed the market this morning with earnings that were below expectations. The health insurer had net earnings of $184.3m, or $1.18 per diluted share, for the period covering the last 3 months of 2007, compared with net earnings of $0.97 per diluted share in the corresponding quarter of 2006.
Lumber producer Weyerhaeuser slid into loss in the fourth-quarter, losing 30 cents a share, compared with positive earnings per share of $2.12 a year earlier. The company has responded to reduced demand from the slumping housing sector by cutting back costs.
US wholesale trade inventories are due to be released today and will be examined to see the effects of weak retail sales on distributors’ inventories.
