LONDON (ShareCast) - BAE Systems and VT Group have been confirmed the builders of two new aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy.
The two warships, to be named HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will be built by a consortium of the two companies, French group Thales and Babcock at Portsmouth, Barrow-in-Furness, Glasgow and Rosyth safeguarding up to 10,000 jobs.
The ships and their aircraft would "transform the UK's defence capabilities when they enter service, delivering air power in support of the full range of future operations at sea, in the air and on land,", said First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band.
Babcock anticipates that the CVF contract will be worth some £600m to it through the duration of the programme until 2015. The 65,000-tonne ships are due to be delivered between 2014 and 2016.
