Reckitt licenses drug delivery technology

LONDON (ShareCast) - Household products group Reckitt Benckiser has exclusively licensed elements of QLT Inc.’s Atrigel sustained-release drug delivery technology.

US company QLT will receive $25m in advance and may receive potential milestone payments of up to $5m based on the successful development of two Atrigel-formulated products.

Certain rights to the technology are being retained by QLT and its prior licensees.

Reckitt’s US-based speciality pharmaceutical subsidiary, Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals, will take over operation of QLT’s corporate facility in Fort Collins, Colorado, along with responsibility for 18 QLT employees.

“This agreement with QLT USA represents a strategic business opportunity that will contribute to the longevity and continued growth of our company going forward,”said Shaun Thaxter, president of Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals Inc.

The Atrigel drug delivery system consists of biodegradable polymers dissolved in biocompatible carriers.
