LONDON (ShareCast) - Wall Street opened barely changed today as some disappointing results offset a wave of M&A talk in the airways industry.
Boeing has received its biggest order so far this year as Korean Air said it would buy 25 aircrafts in a deal worth $5.5bn. The order will bring its total net orders for the year to 847.
Meanwhile, Wall Street Journal says that Southwest Airlines has told Delta Air Lines and US Airways that it would buy any assets they sell if they merged.
Elsewhere shares in search engine Google topped $500 mark for the first time ever, meaning it has now risen nearly six-fold since going public.
The Dow Jones climbed 4 points early on to 12,320 while the Nasdaq was unchanged at 2,453. The S&P 500 rose 2 to 1,402.
Video game retailer GameStop just missed expectations with its third quarter figures, posting net earnings of $13.6m compared with a loss of $2.5m a year ago. Revenue nearly doubled to $1.01bn from $534m a year earlier.
Equipment firm Deere & Co reported a better than expected 19% rise in fourth quarter earnings to $277.3m, on sales up 3% to $5.12bn. However shares fell as guidance suggested lower profits in the coming year.
PepsiCo has agreed to buy California-based Naked Juice from private equity firm North Castle Partners for an undisclosed sum. The company has sales of around $150m.
Telecoms firm Verizon Communications gained ground after Credit Suisse upgraded the shares to “outperform” from “neutral” and lifted its price target to $43 from $38, arguing that the outlook is set to improve.
