Week ahead: House of Lords, Trump in focus

UK house of Lords

The coming was expected to be light in terms of data on both sides of the Pond, although the first debate on the Article 50 Brexit bill in the House of Lords, on Monday, did hold the potential to move markets.

In other UK data, and in parallel to the above, Rightmove would release its house price figures for the month of February and the Confederation of British Industry its respective surveys for total industrial orders and retail sales.

Stateside, the February manufacturing sector purchasing managers' index from IHS Markit also figured among the top market events on the calendar.

Nonetheless, what might yet turn out to be the main event of the holiday-shortened week was not to be found on any calendar, US President Donald Trump's announcement on fiscal stimulus and there was as of yet no fixed date for it.

US markets were to remain closed on 20 February in observance of Presidents Day.

Also on that Monday, European Council president Donald Tusk was scheduled to meet US vice-president Mike Pence.

The minutes of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on 31 January/1 February, on Wednesday, would also merit watching.

In Eurozone news, Tuesday would bring with it one of the highest-frequency indicators for the euro area, IHS Markit's manufacturing PMI for February.
