Born in 1972 in Tamil Nadu, India, Pichai joined Google in 2004 to lead the product management and innovation efforts for a suite of Google's client software products, including the Google Chrome browser and Chrome OS, as well as being largely responsible for Google Drive, the cloud storage platform.
He was also part of the development of Google's Calendar and Gmail, two of the company's key products. In March 2013, Pichai added Android to the Google products he oversaw, replacing Andy Rubin.
A year later, in 2014, Pichi was appointed as the company's 'product chief'.
Google's co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page made public the announcement through a blog post, as they take the top roles in the new holding company. Page will become Alphabet's CEO, while Brin will serve as president. Google itself will become an operating unit under the control of Pichai.
Page said Pichai, who has a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, a master’s degree from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, had "really stepped up since October of last year, when he took on product and engineering responsibility for our internet businesses. Sergey and I have been super excited about his progress and dedication to the company."
Pichai's appointment was also hailed by the company's executive chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt.
“I feel very fortunate to have someone as talented as he is to run the slightly slimmed down Google and this frees up time for me to continue to scale our aspirations," Schmidt said.
Really excited about the vision and brilliance of Sundar.. he's going to be a great CEO! http://t.co/2bqtPEjoQH
