T-Mobile owner Deutsche Telekom is said to have entered the discussions on an informal basis, amidst intense scrutiny of mergers and acquisitions in the industry in recent times.
Sprint's largest shareholder SoftBank Group has also been involved in the preliminary talks.
In the last week both Softbank chairman Masayoshi Son and Deutsche boss Tim Hoettges told investors that they are both open to the potential merger.
"It is not only permitted and possible, but now very likely that discussions will get under way concerning various potential strategic combinations of businesses in our industry," Hoettges said. "That includes our company, T-Mobile US."
Washington is already looking at the possible deal for AT&T to purchase Time Warner Inc, and all eyes will turn to Donald Trump and how his youthful administration looks at the telecoms deals.
Speculation has been rife about a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile, even after a previous attempt of the former to acquire the latter in 2014.
