Advocacy group launches petition to halt Trump's Scottish golf resort
Last week, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Scottish Natural Heritage made formal objections to a proposal made by Donald Trump that would see his Aberdeenshire golf course expand into a gaudy complex featuring a luxury hotel and 1,450 homes.
In what has been referred to as a top example of the president's foreign experience, the project which Trump had said would be a $1.5bn investment has in fact been little more than a sieve, having reportedly lost $1.8m since the former reality star bought the 1,800-acre estate in 2006.
Aberdeenshire Council will meet on August 22 to discuss the plans.
The global advocacy group, SumOfUs have launched a petition to block further planning permission on the site, citing issues with sewage, pollution and environmental protection.
The petition says, "Trump's rhetoric has bolstered white supremacists across the globe leading to the horrific events in Virginia this past weekend. Now we have a chance to reject Trump's hatred and protect our environment in one fell swoop."
“Donald Trump’s planned expansion of his golf course would be an environmental and economic disaster, and will cause irreparable damage to the beautiful and unspoiled dunes iconic to the local community,” said Callum Hamilton, SumOfUs campaigner from Scotland.
The petition currently has over 37,000 signatures and can be viewed here.
