A Google spokesperson said: “After much deliberation, Google has decided not to proceed with leasing the Sorting Office at this time.”
Google declined to say why it has pulled out of the deal but it said it is “committed to Ireland” and that it will “continue to invest” in its Irish operations.
According to Bloomberg, the building was located in Dublin’s Docklands area and was previously used as a sorting office by Ireland’s state-owned postal service, An Post.
Ireland has become a major European hub for tech giants such as Google, Apple, and Facebook as it has lower corporation taxes than the UK.
Google employees, which work in customer service roles, are currently working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company said it expects its employees to return to the office in January 2021.
In May as the pandemic did not subside, Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai extended the search giant’s work from home order.
“To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021 for roles that don’t need to be in the office,” Pichai said.
