However, passengers worried about flying on planes devoid of pilots’ handbook should not fret, for the budget airline has decided to replace traditional manuals with iPads, in a bid to improve time management and productivity.
The Ireland-based carrier has installed the so-called Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) for all pilots, across its entire fleet of 300 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
“With a rapidly growing operation across 71 European bases, the logistical challenges of delivering information to crew are instantly simplified with the introduction of the iPad as an Electronic Flight Bag,” said Ryanair’s Group Director of Operations, Michael Hickey.
“Our progression towards a paperless flight deck has efficiency benefits recognised across the industry. A paperless cockpit is an efficient cockpit.”
Ryanair added that over the next couple months it aims to completely remove paper from the flight deck, eliminating 15kgs of manual from each cockpit which, the airline added, will generate fuel savings and reduce the firm’s environmental impact.
The budget airline recently announced a partnership with Booking.com and, over the last 18 months, has moved towards a more customer-friendly approach, by allowing passengers to bring an extra bag on board and redesigning its website to simplify the booking process.
Here’s hoping the iPads will be always fully charged.
Ryanair shares were 0.47% up to €8.51 at 14:45 on Thursday.
